Yes, the acting on this show is notoriously terrible. But there have
been moments--not a whole lot, but still--where I realized, "Well, so
and so's acting isn't too bad, for this show." I just couldn't bring up
-any- for Andrew Shue, Brooke Langton, and quite a few more...I started
running out of moments after about 7 or so, and had to really rack my
brain for the last couple on the list. Oh well, we all know people don't
watch Melrose for the acting...
- Lisa Rinna's acting in the scene where Peter dumps her at the altar
wasn't bad. I actually felt kind of sorry for her when she ended up in a
crumpled, broken heap on the floor of the wedding chapel, even though
she deserved it.
- The scenes near the end of season 3 when Kimberly really started
going nuts were pretty good, and caused some TV critics to refer to
Marcia Cross as "the only cast member on Melrose Place who can act". The
scene I remember being impressed by was when she first saw "Henry" in
the mirror in her motel room, then after he went away she totally broke
down, sliding down the wall and crying to herself, "Oh God, I'm going
crazy, I'm going crazy, no..."
- Laura Leighton had a few moments that made me realize she had some
talent. I started out hating her character and then feeling sympathy in
a couple scenes. The first time I felt sorry for her was after she
turned her first trick for the escort service, and tried to be friendly
and talk to the john, who just brushed her off and left. Then she took a
shower and started crying and scrubbing with the soap, obviously feeling
like a slut.
- I also remember the scene where she finally gave in to Chris
Marchette when he threatened to have Jake beaten beyond recognition if
she didn't let him (Chris) sleep with her. I remember her sitting on the
edge of the bed and sobbing quietly as she unbuttoned her suit, looking
totally defeated.
- Oh yeah, and I felt sorry for her after Michael seduced her into
signing some crappy divorce agreement and laughed at her, and she said
calmly that she'd get him if it was the last thing she ever did. She
looked and sounded like she totally hated his guts.
- Courtney Thorne-Smith's acting wasn't bad when Alison finally
realized she'd have to go to rehab. I remember the scene where she ran
away, then gave up and signed herself in was pretty good.
- Doug Savant wasn't bad, and played a gay man convincingly (unless the
rumor about him really being gay I heard from a couple people is true,
then I guess he wasn't acting). One way or another, his acting was
good, and he could have played him as swishy, but didn't. I thought he
proved his acting skills in the storyline where he dates the closeted
soap star, who has to marry so the female fans aren't turned off.
- Heather Locklear's acting has really improved through the seasons.
She was good in the scene where she sees Peter screwing around with
Taylor through the sliding glass doors of his condo. Her face just
falls, and she looks so sad.
- Her acting wasn't bad either in the whole Jack Parezi plot. She
really did look like she was terrified of him, and hated him.
- Daphne Zuniga had a few OK moments, especially when she goes to
Kimberly's to get her baby, and Kimberly is telling her she doesn't
know what she's talking about, and you can see her slowly start to
panic. I remember too that the scene where Kimberly gets hysterical
because Michael finally got fed up and went and gave Jo the baby back,
and she runs out into the ocean screaming and crying. With most
actresses on the show, they couldn't pull it off, without making you
laugh till you peed your pants, but Marcia Cross actually made it
credible, when the script was completely stupid.
