"The Light At The End Of The Tumble"

Billy, our favorite Rebel Without A Clue, shows up at Kate's Crabbiness House again despite the fact Kate had a gun in his face not 12 hours earlier. Sam meets him outside where he tells her he just came to say goodbye. Before he goes, however, he launches into a big speech about Kate's motives and how she's using Sam to make up for her mistakes when Sam was growing up. "I'll see ya," he says and walks away. When Sam doesn't stop him, he comes back like a bad case of athlete's foot and starts in on Round 2 of the Top Ten Reasons Sam Should Come Back To LA With My Poor Sorry White Boy Ass. Sam explains, "my mom needs me and I need her." Right about then Kate herself appears on the porch to remind Sam, yet again, that she has customers waiting. As Sam walks back into the restaurant, Billy tells her, "I love you - and nothing will ever change that" - yeah, nothing except maybe some new writers, a new cast and a new season.

Inside the restaurant's kitchen, Kate approaches Sam and excitedly tells her all the wonderful boring plans she has for them for the weekend when Sam reminds her mother how her boyfriend just "walked out of her life". When Kate tells Sam, "this is where a little girl belongs", Sam confronts her mother about her intentions. "You were a good mother," she says as her mother morphs from Snake Woman into Snow White and sobs about how she regrets not fighting Sam's convict father years ago. Sam reassures her mother, "you raised me right the first time" and they hug and cry and now I'm wondering how many of the hungry customers walked out during this exchange.

Peter and Lexi are in bed - again - at her hotel room when it's disclosed that Lexi is due to receive Coop's second set of accounting records and Peter is the one who let her in on the fact Coop had them to begin with. Continuing this non-romantic banter, Peter inquires about the patient Coop had an affair with - something every man should be sure to ask his lover about, especially while naked in bed. Lexi tells him how the patient was in a coma and when she woke up, Coop jumped into bed with her which I'm guessing isn't the best bedside manner for a doctor in a hospital but that's just my opinion. Peter asks what the patient's name was and when Lexi answers, "Kimberly something" Peter asks, "Kimberly Shaw?" because, after all, Kimberly IS such an unusual and unique name. Lexi confirms that it was, indeed, good ol' "dead Kimberly" so Peter fills her in on the details about how she worked at Wilshire Memorial and was married to Michael. Knowing this is more than coincidence, Lexi warns Peter to "watch out" for Coop but Peter just coos, "I can take care of myself - and I can take care of you too" as they embrace.

Michael - whose bandages have FINALLY been removed from his hands - is harassing Megan at work telling her all about how he's in therapy now. As he rattles off random psychobabble like "I'm in purgatory", "I've seen the light" and, my personal favorite, "I'm in touch with my inner child" Megan does her best to ignore him and continue going about her business. Coop sticks his nose out of his office long enough to inform Michael that Megan gave her 2-weeks notice and then reminds us all yet AGAIN how he himself has marital problems because, after all, it is the only storyline he's been in for weeks. The phone rings and it's Eric asking Megan out to dinner on Friday. She politely tells him she'll "let him know" and hangs up. Michael is outraged to discover she's dating while he's going through all his therapy but his ranting falls on deaf ears as Megan waltzes out the office door to lunch.

Over at AWA (Amanda Woodward Advertising is just too long to type out every time) Eric is in Amanda's office with his feet kicked up on her desk when Amanda walks in and discovers him telling some secretary to send flowers to Megan every day. Amanda, having been the receiver of a similiar floral barrage years ago, reminds Eric how his tactics won't work. Eric cooly tells her his tactics just didn't work on HER as if he's some great Cassanova or something. Amanda just shoos him out of her office so she can get back to work.

Taylor is at work and has even brushed her hair for the occasion when Kyle enters and hands her a box his parents sent to him. Taylor opens it and finds a stuffed teddy bear for the baby. Overjoyed, she excitedly starts yapping about the baby when Kyle somberly inquires about the paternity test. Taylor assures him the results should be back "any day now" and then tells him he should "be patient with Amanda" as all this baby nonsense is surely overwhelming her. Kyle angrily tells her he doesn't need her advice. "You're nothing like Amanda... from now on, that topic is off limits," he snaps and storms off.

Craig is sitting in the courtyard enjoying the fresh LA smog-filled night air when Jennifer comes by to ruin his tranquility with her presence and a plate of cookies. She asks him if he's decided what he's going to do with his insurance money and he informs her he's going to take a cruise. This upsets Jennifer who makes no secret about it and tries to talk Craig out of it but it's no use. He reminds her it's HIS decision to make and walks away towards his apartment. As he goes, Jennifer quietly says, "I'll miss you" stopping Craig dead in his tracks. He turns to her and tells her, "you'll find a guy who wants what you want and I'm not that guy" before heading into his apartment. If he's smart, he locked the door behind him.

Billy arrives home, offers a casual greeting to Jen and her cookies and enters his apartment to find someone - presumably female - pouring wine for 2. He gasps, "Oh my God - it's you!" so now I'm hoping Brooke has finally returned from the dead. Unfortunately, we're not so lucky - it's just Sam in a dress. She tells Billy how she's back for good and how Maryland wasn't for her and how she and her mother talked and then they get down to some hot monkey love which I think is the REAL reason she came back.

Sure enough, the next scene is of the two of them in bed the morning after. I never thought of Billy as any kind of hot stallion lover but he must have found his one true talent as Sam can't keep her hands off of him. Billy, however, tears himself loose so he can go interview graphic artists at work. So I guess in addition to being "The Number Two Man At The Number One Ad Agency", he is now some kind of art expert.

Taylor is at the hospital awaiting her pregnancy test results when Michael enters and breaks the bad news to her that she's not pregnant. Taylor immediately panics and tells Michael "they have to do something" but Michael replies he's not helping her because, "thanks to you my life is a pile of horse manure." He continues about how he's trying to live a "clean and honest life" and suggests Taylor give up because Kyle was bound to find out sooner or later anyway. "Better sooner... than later," he says as he exits the room.

Out in the hallway, Michael approaches the door of Dr. Charette, the family therapist, when Coop walks up and notes the obvious - that Michael is going to see Dr. Charette. Like I said, this guy doesn't have much of a plotline going at the moment so he's got to do the best with what he's got. Coop tells Michael how he himself was once in therapy after he lost a patient in surgery when his cauterizing instrument slipped out of his hand. Shortly thereafter he invented a "fingerless glove" gizmo that would allow doctors to cauterize with the touch of a finger. However, he never patented his idea, which was probably a mistake because the next thing we see is Michael giving dictation to Megan about "his" latest, greatest invention. Megan thinks it's a great idea and when she asks what inspired it, he lies that it came to him in surgery - before the accident (since he's still not able to operate); so much for the "clean and honest life". Their conversation is interrupted by Pool Boy's brother, Flower Delivery Boy, who has flowers for Megan from Eric. Michael is outraged about this and becomes even more angered when he discovers it's the second bouquet Eric has sent. Megan explains that Eric promised to keep sending flowers until she said "yes" to his dinner invitation. Despite Michael's protests, Megan picks up the phone and calls Eric to accept his invitation.

Kyle is in his office at the jazz club when Jennifer walks in. Kyle tells her how he just found out he lost the lease on his Boston restaurant, a fact that neither of them is happy about. As they reminisce about the "good memories" of that restaurant, Amanda walks in and orders Jennifer to get back to work. After Jen leaves, Kyle turns and suggests Amanda "give her a break once in awhile". Amanda heatedly tells him it's not easy for her having to deal with his ex's every day to which Kyle replies, "If you're referring to Taylor, you're being paranoid." He tells her how Taylor expressed concern for Amanda the previous day and urges her to "let it go". Kyle then tells Amanda how he lost the Boston restaurant and then vows to never let the same thing happen to the jazz club, even if it means having to work all night. Amanda quietly tells him she won't wait up for him as she kisses him goodbye and leaves.

Out in the bar, Amanda passes Taylor and tells her Kyle isn't there. Some catty remarks about teddy bears and pregnancy are exchanged at which point Amanda grabs Taylor's wrist and tells her not to ruin her relationship with Kyle. "No one messes with me twice," Amanda warns. Taylor replies that she's "not no one" and, snapping free of Amanda's grasp, loses her balance and tumbles down the stairs. Panic-stricken, Amanda runs down the stairs and, brushing the hair from the now-unconscious Taylor's face (a medical technique I've never seen before) shouts out for someone to call an ambulance.

Kyle is sitting by Taylor's hospital bedside when she finally wakes up. He tells her she only has a few bruises but they won't say anything about the baby. Taylor tells Kyle how she came by the club last night to talk to him but Amanda said he wasn't there which annoys Kyle. She appears ready to confess as she says, "About the baby..." when Michael enters the room and interrupts. He tells them Taylor is going to be fine but, unfortunately, she lost the baby due to the fall. A teary-eyed Taylor asks Kyle to stay with her and he gladly obliges.

Billy buzzes his secretary for the "next applicant" when Sam enters his office. He tells her he's in the middle of interviews but she asks for just a minute of his time. He gives her four so she opens her portfolio and starts covering his desk with all her finger paintings and connect-the-dots while she tells him how her artwork has been featured in various galleries and sold professionally. Sam confesses she's "never done this kind of thing before" as she saunters around to the other side of the desk, planting herself on Billy's lap while she kisses him and tells him how she'll "keep him satisfied all the time". Schwing! Billy tells her she's hired, probably hoping she'll keep doing what she's doing, but instead Sam jumps off of him and dances around the office.

Peter goes into Coop's office and starts poking through a folder on the middle of the desk when Coop walks in and catches him. Peter lies that he's looking for prescription pads and then complains that Michael is nowhere to be found. Coop mentions he might be in therapy, which is news to Peter who is all too anxious to "get some dirt" on Michael. Coop tells him Michael isn't at the top of his list either these days so Peter asks him to do him a favor and explains about the whole deal Megan arranged between Peter and Michael. Coop agrees to see how Michael's hands are doing and then leaves. Peter goes back to the folder he's now fallen in love with and pulls out what appears to be a photocopy of a check. This in itself doesn't seem like a big deal except the cheesy music is so grandiose that you just know Peter has hit the motherload.

Michael is in the middle of a board meeting when Jennifer interrupts saying it's "a family emergency". Michael goes out into the hallway where Jennifer tells him the "emergency" is the fact that Craig is going on a cruise. Annoyed, Michael sarcastically says, "Oh no! A cruise? Didn't he see 'The Poseidon Adventure'?" Jennifer tells Michael how Megan told her about his "invention" and reminds him he needs money to finance his project which Craig conveniently has. Michael tells Jennifer he's not interested and goes back to his meeting.

Look! It's Lexi with clothes on! AND she's not in her hotel room! Instead she's at Peter's enjoying the bayside view when he gives her a present. Opening it, she finds a bunch of photocopies of Coop's accounting records. Peter explains he stole them to help her because he cares about her and then they have sex on the sofa.

Amanda comes home to find Kyle sitting in the dark on the sofa and tells him she's been looking for him everywhere. Kyle tells her Taylor lost the baby but doubts Amanda when she says she's sorry to hear it. He angrily confronts her about the fact she lied to Taylor about him not being at the club which Amanda admits to doing. But she's quick to point out Taylor slipped on her own and missed a step. "So did you when you lied," replies Kyle. He tells her he needs a drink and walks out in a huff.

Coop enters Michael's office at the hospital and immediately notes how Michael is holding his pen suggesting his hands must be healed. So much for discretion. Michael suddenly gets a cramp in his hand and puts the pen down so Coop picks it up and starts talking again about the cauterizing instrument he invented. Michael is quick to tell him such a device would be "awkward and clumsy" and "a bad idea". Coop leaves and Michael calls Jennifer to tell her he might need Craig's help after all. "Leave everything to me," Jen tells her brother as she hangs up and calls the cruise line.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Amanda brings Taylor flowers and tells her she's sorry about her loss. Taylor is packing to leave and doesn't want to talk about it so Amanda apologizes for her behavior explaining how she "sometimes only sees things from her side". Taylor is shocked at the softer side of Amanda and admits she herself does the same thing. When Amanda offers to give Taylor a ride home she happily accepts.

Jennifer and Michael are running around amidst a crowd of people where Craig's ship is docked. However, when they find him, Jennifer calmly tells him she and Michael just "came to see him off". Craig explains there was an anonymous phone call placed to the cruise line saying there was an infectious disease on board and that's why no one has boarded the ship yet. Jennifer tells him about Michael's invention and how he needs capital and, even more importantly, how he "needs" Craig. Craig has obviously learned nothing from his 6 years in college and 2 failed business attempts as he shakes hands with Michael and agrees to be "partners".

Upstairs at the jazz club Eric and Megan are at the bar having a drink while Eric overwhelms Megan with compliments. Blushing, she excuses herself to the "powder room" giving Eric a change to talk to Kyle who's behind the bar. Eric says he's sorry to hear about the Boston restaurant and instead of being polite or gracious Kyle immediately jumps to the defensive and asks who told Eric about it. Eric stumbles for a minute and then says it was Amanda (as if it could be anyone else - this guy has no friends) and that's pretty much where this scene ends.

Billy and Samantha emerge from a movie theatre and Samantha is gushing to Billy about what a romantic he is. She then tells him she doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize his position at the agency and therefore doesn't want to work with him. Turns out some people have been saying the only reason she got the job is because she's Billy's girlfriend. Billy argues that she got the job based on her talent but Sam insists she doesn't want to be the "girlfriend problem". Billy turns to her and says, "Fine - then you won't be my girlfriend. You'll be my wife." Displaying some of the worst acting of his career (if you can even imagine that), he excitedly tells her what a fool he was to reject the notion of marriage when Sam previously brought it up. With that, he gets down on one knee in the middle of the sidewalk and proposes. Sam gleefully says "yes".

Kyle arrives home at Amanda's and thanks her for what she did for Taylor earlier. He starts to talk about his conversation with Eric but Amanda insists he go down and sit with Taylor because "she needs a shoulder to cry on". He agrees and goes down to Taylor's while Amanda watches from her apartment window. Just as he enters her apartment, Eric and Megan enter the courtyard, home from their date. Eric kisses Megan goodnight while Amanda maintains her post from the window and as Megan walks away to her apartment, Eric turns and catches Amanda watching from above. Busted!
