"A Bump In The Night"

This week's episode picks up exactly where the last one left off with Peter escorting a hysterical Lexi upstairs to bed. Lexi is crying that she's "going to dump the pills and quit" so it's only a matter of time before the newest Melrose redhead is wearing go-go boots and working as a receptionist. She insists that Peter join her in bed because she doesn't want to be alone but Peter tells her he has some paperwork he must tend to first but promises he won't be away long. With that, he walks downstairs and out to his car which he starts and drives away in. Obviously whatever mixture of tranquilizers and alcohol Lexi took made her deaf to all this. Peter is driving slowly back down the street to see what or who Lexi hit when he sees a man limping and dragging his leg. Peter jumps out of the car and runs over to the man who falls while trying to get away from Peter. Peter explains he's a doctor and, after glancing at the man's leg, concludes he has a "possible fracture" and calls for an ambulance on his cellular phone. He asks if the man remembers what happened but it all happened so fast that he doesn't remember anything except for the fact that the driver of the car that hit him was a long-haired female. I guess that eliminates Bed Head Taylor as a suspect.

The following morning, Amanda wakes up in her bed with those same leopard print sheets she's not changed in months. Next to her lies Kyle who she snuggles up with and starts kissing. They talk about how happy they are that they're together again and promise not to fight ever again and listening to them I'm starting to think maybe Santa Claus really does exist. There's a knock at the door but Kyle tells Amanda to ignore it, which she does at first. However, the knocking gets louder and more persistent which jolts Amanda awake out of this dream she's having. She opens the door to be greeted by Taylor who quips, "No need to pull your gun out again - I'm not armed." She hands Amanda a business card and tells her it's the number of Taylor's and Kyle's lawyer. She then instructs Amanda to have her lawyer call their lawyer so they can draw up the necessary Transfer Of Ownership papers for the jazz club. Obviously, signing it over to Kyle on a piece of junk mail wasn't good enough for Taylor. Now that she and Kyle will own two businesses together, Taylor gloats, "Hardly a moment goes by that we don't spend together." Unfazed, Amanda replies, "Too bad for Kyle", and slams the door in Taylor's face.

In broad daylight, Peter is cleaning the blood off of the front of Lexi's car which is backed into the driveway for all the world to see. He finishes, stuffs the rag into his pocket and goes inside where Lexi is sitting at the kitchen table. Peter goes to the sink and notices Lexi's empty prescription bottle. She explains that she poured her pills down the sink and she's quitting drugs and alcohol. Peter is supportive of her but when she suggests checking herself into a rehab program he balks and tells her they can consider that later. Lexi tells him she needs something to do during the day and wants to get a job with an established interior design firm which Peter excitedly supports. He kisses her and calls her "kid" which is disturbing in and of itself. After Lexi walks away, Peter pulls out the rag and looks longingly at it.

Michael goes to Megan's apartment with a dozen roses begging forgiveness and even goes so far as to whine, "I cut myself on the thorns." Megan refuses to open the door but agrees to talk to Michael through the window. Amazingly enough, this is the first time in the six seasons of this show that the venetian blinds have been used for something other than peeping through. Michael apologizes for lying but Megan won't forgive him so he tells her how Coop is "out to get him". Megan is still unimpressed so Michael brings up the lawsuit Coop is bringing against him and begs, "You gotta believe me!" Megan cooly replies, "You know what Michael? At this point I would believe a politician, a used car salesman and Pinnochio before I would believe you!" With that, she turns away leaving Michael to commit Floral Homicide by whacking the bouquet - thorns and all - over the railing.

The nameless bum who Lexi hit is resting comfortably in his hospital bed talking to 2 nameless police detectives when Peter walks in. He and the detectives go out in the hallway to discuss the man whose name turns out to be Bob. Peter lies that he didn't witness the accident but, instead, noticed Bob limping when he pulled his car over to make a phone call. Disappointed, but not discouraged, the detectives tell Peter to call them should he remember anything else.

Craig goes to Coop's office per Coop's request and instantly gets defensive about why he's been summoned there. Coop says he has proof that he invented the cauterizing glove and then shows Craig sketches and notarized plans dating back to 1995. He reminds Craig that Michael is selfish and only cares about himself. His confidence and loyalty swayed, Craig asks Coop what he wants him to do so Coop instructs him to "keep quiet" and not to mention any of this to anyone - including Jen. He tells Craig that, together, they can save Craig's company.

Billy and his briefcase are just heading out of the office when the phone rings. It's Sam who is calling her husband to inform him she's doing SO well in Seattle her trip has been extended an extra day and she won't be home tonight as originally planned. She asks Billy to "please be nice to Connie" and then suggests he "show her around LA" when I think all Connie really wants to see is more of Billy. Billy agrees and just as he hangs up the phone, Connie herself enters. Hearing that Sam isn't coming home, Connie asks Billy out to dinner but he declines citing he has a lot of work to do despite the fact he was just leaving for home not 2 seconds earlier. They make plans to go to dinner the following evening - "Connie's treat" - and as Billy goes to make some coffee for his long night, Connie picks up the framed picture of Sam on his desk, stares at it and fantasizes about being Sam and Billy's new domestic love slave.

Craig is snuggled up in bed with Jennifer who is on her back with a light shining directly in her face, as if the heavens opened up just for her. She tells Craig she's worried about the deposition she has to give tomorrow so Craig asks if she's really sure Michael is innocent. As Coop predicted, Jen immediately defends her brother saying, "Michael is a lot of things but he's not a criminal." Craig is silent but still obviously unconvinced so Jen asks him if he knows something she doesn't. Yes, he knows a lot of things she doesn't because he went to Ivy League business schools and she, on the other hand, has the IQ of pork rinds. Craig lies that he doesn't and, under a really poor voiceover dub, tells Jen he's "going to get something to eat" as he gets out of bed.

Peter is once again checking in on his newest patient Bob who is raving about how great the hospital applesauce is. Peter explains that the hospital wants to transfer Bob to a county hospital since he doesn't have any insurance but Peter assures him that he's doing everything he can to keep him there since Bob is "his patient". Bob is suspicious of Peter's motives but before they can really pursue this pointless scene Lexi enters the room to ask Peter if he wants to get some dinner. Not wanting Bob to get a good look at Lexi, Peter quickly ushers her out of the room but not before Bob seems to recognize her. Out in the hallway, Lexi is offended that Peter snapped at her so he lies that Bob is irritable because he got run over by a hit-and-run driver. Instead of realizing the hit-and-run driver might actually be herself, Lexi instead croons some nonsense about Peter always saving the world. She kisses him and walks away so I guess she wasn't hungry for food after all. Maybe she's going to get herself some of that wonderful applesauce.

Jennifer shows up at Craig's deposition "for support" despite the fact Craig adamantly objects to her being there. He tells her to go back to the office but Michael says she should stay with Craig since Michael has to go to work at the hospital. Craig walks away with Jen on his heels as Peter approaches Michael to ask for a favor. Michael notes that he's already approved Peter's request that the hospital pay for "a homeless guy's" medical expenses but listens as Peter asks Michael to re-hire Lexi. Michael explains that, even if Lexi works for free, he can't afford to buy the materials because of his lawsuit against Coop. Peter offers to "foot the bill" so Michael wants to know what's in it for him. Obviously free furniture isn't enough for Michael as Peter sighs, "My God, is everything blackmail to you?" He denies Michael's request that they throw Coop out of their practice but agrees to let Michael continue his reign as Chief Of Staff for a couple more months.

Coop goes to Megan's apartment to return the CDs he borrowed from Jen to use for her coma therapy. Megan coos how impressed she is with Coop's bedside manner and tells him, "I owe my life to you." As an expression of gratitude, she offers to cook him dinner the following evening and he gladly accepts.

Jennifer shows up late to Craig's deposition and, again, he tells her they need someone at the office. She tells him to relax because she got a temp so even though they can't afford new carpet somehow they can manage to pay $15 an hour for some girl to answer the phones. Craig's deposition continues and, much to Jen's horror, Craig admits he saw sketches and detailed documents that would prove Coop's claim. When asked if he believes Michael misrepresented himself to form their company, Craig agrees. Jen flies off the handle so a 10 minute recess is called. Out in the hallway, Craig tells Jennifer everything he said was true and informs her he wants Michael out of the company and replaced with Coop. Even though Craig says he's doing it to save "their" business, Jen insists on standing by her brother and stalks off. Coop walks up and mumbles to Craig, "That family loyalty thing - bites you in the butt every time."

At the hospital, Michael is being photographed by a short-haired blonde who, ironically, looks like a cross between Ellen Degeneres and her girlfriend Anne Heche. Michael is bragging about the newsletter he's going to appear in as if any of his employees actually read the thing. They are interrupted by Jennifer who barges in to tell Michael about Craig's deposition. The photographer leaves and Jen attacks Michael demanding to know if he's been lying to her. Michael maintains his innocence so the two Mancini's put their heads together and come up with a plan. Jennifer tells Michael that Coop has been spending a lot of time with Megan which is funny because, as near as I could tell, they only spent about 2 minutes together so far in this episode. She starts babbling about bugging the room when she comes up with the brilliant idea of a "Nanny Cam" - a hidden camera that she'll set up to record Megan's date with Coop the following evening. Conveniently, the apartment next door is empty so I guess Pool Boy really DID leave the show with Matt. Jennifer says she'll figure out a way to get the key from Amanda so they can set up a TV in the vacant apartment and spy on Megan and Coop. Michael is ecstatic and probably a little envious that he didn't think of all this by himself.

Kyle is sitting at the jazz club bar getting drunk when Taylor walks up to him to share her latest good news. She tells him she just got done talking to their lawyer who informed her Amanda signed over her half of the club and it's all "a done deal". She excitedly disses on Amanda's inability to run the club properly until Kyle finally tells her to shut up. Taylor responds that she's worried about Kyle because he's been drinking a lot and rarely has a kind word to say these days. Funny - he hasn't had a kind word to say to her in almost a year. Kyle tells her, "my behavior is my business" and solemnly walks away.

Across the club sitting at a table are Connie and Billy who is reluctantly fulfilling his wife's request that he entertain her former roommate. Connie is rambling on about some twins she and Sam once dated and Billy looks as interested in hearing this as I do when my roommate makes me watch animals eat each other on the Discovery channel. Craig joins them just long enough to comment about how lucky Connie is to have "an old friend". At the rate Craig is going, he'd be lucky to have ANY friends, period. Noticing that Jen is working the bar, Craig offers to go get a round of drinks. As he leaves the table, Connie sighs, "I love this song" and asks Billy to dance with her. Billy politely refuses but Connie persists and we all know how weak Billy's spine is so he agrees. Over at the bar, Craig approaches Jen and insists he's doing what he's doing "for the good of the company" but Jen doesn't believe him and keeps on walking. Back on the dance floor, Connie dreamily tells Billy what a good dancer he is and then compares him to her ex-boyfriend Charlie. She tells Billy that, not only is he a better dancer than Charlie, but she feels like she knows him better than she did Charlie. Billy appears to be getting the same uncomfortable "heebie-jeebies" as I am and notes Sam will be home soon. "I'd like to spend the rest of the night alone with my wife if you don't mind," he tells Connie as he breaks free of her grasp and leaves.

Amanda is at home sitting on the sofa apparently trying to read a book via osmosis with her head lying on the cover. She stands and crosses the room to her open window where, down below, Kyle has just entered the courtyard. He looks up at her and she looks down at him but before either of them can say anything, Sam walks in and says hello to Kyle. He cockily tells Sam how great things are for him as he walks away leaving Amanda and Sam to talk briefly about how great her trip went. Sam notices the tension between Kyle and Amanda which, surprisingly, Amanda admits and thanks Sam for her concern. Sam smiles and walks into her apartment which is eerily quiet. She notices an unopened bottle of champagne on the table along with a note and, smiling, she runs into her bedroom and jumps into bed with Billy. Billy is startled to see her and tells her they need to talk about Connie so Sam gushes about how nice it was of Connie to spend the night in a hotel so they could have some privacy. As she babbles on about how wonderful Connie is, the camera pans up and we see Connie standing outside the window using the venetian blinds for their normal purpose - spying on stupid people named Billy.

The detectives pay a visit to Peter only he's not home so they talk to Lexi. She has no idea what's going on and asks if everything is ok so Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum tell her EVERYTHING about the accident and Bob and Peter's "good samaritan" routine. Having divulged everything they know, they head off to the hospital to look for Peter.

Jennifer is busy being a Jr. Detective herself as she secures a miniature camcorder inside a hollowed out book. Megan arrives home so Jen quickly puts the book in the bookcase so she and Michael can spy on Megan and Coop. Much to Jen's dismay, however, Megan informs her she made arrangements to cook dinner at Coop's place so Jennifer could have the apartment to herself. Jennifer insists she make dinner there because, should Megan and Michael eventually get divorced, a possible affair with Coop would only complicate matters further. Besides, Jennifer explains that she's going to see a movie "she really wants to see" and instead of asking which movie she's going to see, Megan falls back on her blondeness and just agrees to cook dinner there.

Bob is in his comfy hospital bed watching cartoons when Lexi comes to pay him a visit. She admits she's Peter's girlfriend and then tells him she used to do social work with accident victims back in Cleveland or Hell or wherever it is she's from. Bob informs her of all the wonderful things Peter has done for him, including treating him for free, getting the hospital to cover his expenses and arranging for Bob to do his physical rehab at a facility in Arizona. He continues that the detectives are closer to finding the woman that hit him especially now that his mind is clearer and he remembers the car was red. Panic-stricken, Lexi leaves and runs into Peter in the hallway. She asks if Bob was the thud they heard the other night and, when Peter admits it is, Lexi gets hysterical and insists she turn herself in to the police. Peter will have none of this honesty crap and tells her all he's done to cover up this situation, knowing full well he'll be charged as an accessory if he gets caught. To drive the point home, he reminds Lexi she was on drugs AND alcohol when she hit Bob which is a felony, so she agrees to let Peter continue to take care of everything.

Looks like Megan is falling back on old behaviors or else she's taking fashion tips from Taylor. She enters the living room wearing what appears to be a black slip as she serves Coop wine and duck pate. As they continue having meaningless conversation, Michael and Jennifer watch through their monitor in the adjacent empty apartment. Jennifer has even gone so far as to pop some popcorn for this festive event! They continue watching as Craig knocks on the door and tells Megan he's looking for Jen, concerned because she hasn't been returning his phone calls. Craig leaves and Michael instructs Jen to go next door and get Megan talking about the glove lawsuit. As she grabs her keys and sneaks under the window past her apartment, Megan asks Coop why he doesn't just leave the practice. He explains that he "likes Peter" just as Jennifer barges in claiming she forgot her money. Pulling Megan aside, Jen tells her Michael has been calling her all day and warns Megan he might stop by and wouldn't it just be horrible if he found Coop there, especially given that lawsuit thing. She skips back out so Megan asks Coop about the lawsuit. Coop explains how he lost a patient because of the cauterizer and, thus, invented the glove. Michael watches all this but when Jen comes in right after it, he lies and tells her that Coop just admitted the sketches are fake and instructs Jen to go get them. Jen excitedly schemes to slip Coop's office key off Megan's key ring and "do some detective work".

At AWA, Billy and Sam go to Amanda's office just as she's finishing a phone call with Glazed Out - the Seattle client Sam just returned from. Commending Sam for a job well done, Amanda offers to take her out to lunch. Sam is proud but feels guilty because Snake Woman (a.k.a. Connie) is out of a job now that Sam is back. Amanda mentions that Billy needs an assistant but Billy is quick to note that Connie is a graphic artist, not a lowly office assistant. Sam says, "Connie needs the money - she doesn't care what she does" and if that's the case why doesn't she just get a job as a stripper or a hooker or a psychotic, nymphomaniac, sex-advice DJ? Hey - it's worked before. Amanda promises to move Connie into the next graphic artist position that comes available so Billy agrees. As he and Sam approach Connie with the "good news" she hugs Billy and excitedly tells him, "I'll be the best assistant you ever had!"

Lexi angrily marches out of the condo as Peter pulls up in her car which is now painted a dull, "Smoked Silver" color. Given that it looks like the Maaco people melted a ton of Crayola silver crayons on it, I'd be ticked off too. Peter explains that it had to be done but before their argument can really go anywhere, THE DETECTIVES pull up to talk to Peter. Lexi instantly starts to panic almost to the point of hyperventilation so Peter tells her to stay calm and be quiet. The detectives tell Peter that Bob was released and want to know where he went, so Peter lies that he doesn't know but thinks Bob mentioned something about having relatives up north. The detectives thank him as they get back into their car while Lexi mutters, "I have to confess." Peter hisses back under his breath, "You have to shut your mouth" so Lexi tells him she needs a pill to get through this. Peter insists that's not the answer so she starts in on the confession thing again as she runs in and grabs the phone. Feeling trapped between a rock and a Junkie Girl, Peter agrees to give her "just one pill".

Michael and Coop are at Kyle's having dinner where Michael is raving about the food. Coop, who thought Michael asked him to dinner because he wanted to settle the lawsuit, quickly discovers Michael's real reasons for asking him there. "What are your intentions toward my wife?" Michael asks which outrages Coop who gets up to leave. However, before he can get out the door, Megan walks in to place a takeout order, so he asks her to join him for dinner. Despite Michael's objections, she agrees.

Jennifer bounces - literally - into Coop's office with flashlight in hand and with all the moving around she's doing it's a wonder no one outside sees her strobe light impersonation. She almost immediately finds the sketches but, hearing Peter and Lexi's voices, hides up against the wall of Coop's office. Outside, Peter gives Lexi her "one last pill" and tells her he's "not an enabler", despite the fact he's treated a homeless man for free, convinced the hospital to drop his charges, arranged for private rehabilitation, lied to the authorities, had his girlfriend's car repainted and now is giving her drugs. If he's not an enabler then I'm Tori Spelling. Peter justifies his current actions by citing the fact he knows she's upset about the hit-and-run accident. Lexi replies by thanking him for covering up for her as Jennifer listens and absorbs every word of their conversation.

Back at the empty apartment, Jennifer gives Michael the documents but Michael quickly points out that they're photocopies and not the originals. Megan and Coop return home so they switch on the monitor to see what's going on next door. Michael insists Jennifer call home and get Megan to talk about the glove but Jen insists it won't work because even Megan isn't that stupid. She isn't? This is the same woman who believed lie after lie from her husband regarding honesty and fidelity while he busy impregnating Fish Lips, right? Jennifer is distracted by the monitor so Michael tells her to move so he can see what's going on. Much to his dismay, he sees Megan and Coop making out on the couch.

Kyle's face appears to be stuck to the bar it's been there so long when Taylor comes up with a plate of food and - as if he needs it - a bottle of wine. Kyle tells her the place is closed which includes her and Taylor may be a lot of things but I have yet to see her ever be "closed". She reminds Kyle that she's part-owner of the jazz club and the restaurant and how she's been running both since he's been on his "ridiculous Amanda bender". Kyle tells her, "What's ridiculous is you trying to slide back into my life." Pointing out that she's brought him dinner consisting of all his favorites, he sighs and tells her she's pathetic. Taylor brings up the fact they "made love" the other night but Kyle is quick to point out, "That wasn't love... that was sex." He continues, "The only difference between you and a whore is that you didn't ask for money." Teary eyed, Taylor demands to know why Kyle is so hateful toward her, especially given that he was once "happy" with Taylor. Kyle hisses, "No... I was a good actor. The best thing you did was chase after Peter." He walks away, leaving Taylor to mutter to herself, "I will make you love me."
